Midstream and Zwarries win the National SA Top Schools Squash Tournament
Midstream College’s Girls Team and the Zwartkop Hoërskool Boys Team won the National SA Top Schools Squash Tournament which was held in Pietermaritzburg this past weekend.
We are so excited to share that the Girls Team from Midstream College and the Boys Team from Hoërskool Zwartkop have WON the National Top Schools Squash Tournament for 2023!
It was an exciting, stressful, and busy few days in Pietermaritzburg, where both teams competed against the best high school teams from the other regions. And both teams took the gold medals!
The path to the finals
The National Top Schools Squash Tournament is an annual event, where the best high school teams in South Africa play against each other to determine the best high school team!
It starts with a regional play-out, where each region hosts a tournament to determine the best high school team for that region. Then, these teams will play in a final game against the top schools from other regions.
The final rounds were held in Pietermaritzburg from Thursday, 10 August 2023, to Saturday, 12 August 2023—the first three rounds were pooled matches, followed by a cross-pool round. The final games were played on Saturday, 12 August 2023.
Midstream College Girls Team – The Road to Victory
The girls team from Midstream College won the Northerns regional tournament, beating the teams from Zwartkop Hoërskool and Menlopark Hoërskool, earning their spot in the final round.
The team consisted of the following players:
- Awande Malinga
- Kiara Poole
- Elzandri Janse van Rensburg (CJS)
- Anushka Janse van Rensburg (CJS)
- Namratha Eswari Niranjan (CJS)
- Cassey Kemp (CJS)
In the first round, Midstream College played against Eunice High School (Freestate) and won 20-0. They faced Epworth School (KZN) in the second round, also winning a comfortable 20-0. In the last round in the pool, they played against Herschel Girls School (Western Cape), beating them.
In the cross-pool round, Midstream College played Clarendon High School for Girls (Eastern Cape) and beat them 20-1.
The final match for first and second place was played on Saturday against St Anne’s Diocesan School, and the girls team from Midstream College won this match!
Zwartkop Hoërskool Boys Team – The Road to Victory
The boys team from Zwartkop Hoërskool won the Northerns regional tournament, beating Hoërskool Eldoraigne, Menlopark Hoërskool, Midstream College, and Pretoria Boys High School.
The team consisted of the following players (all CJS players):
- Luhann Groenewald
- Juan-Corne Brand
- Jonathan Olivier
- Frederik Botha
- HJ Coetzee
- Logan Kidson
In the first round, Zwartkop Hoërskool played against Rondebosch Boys High School (Western Cape) and won 17-3. They faced King Edward VII School (Joburg Squash) in the second round, also winning 19-4. In the last round in the pool, they played against Grey High School (Eastern Cape), taking the win 18-7.
In the cross-pool round, Zwartkop Hoërskool played St Andrews School (Freestate) and beat them 14-8.
The final match was played on Saturday against Selborne College (East London, Border), and the boys’ team from Zwartkop Hoërskool won this match 14-8!
