Centurion Junior Squash: Attire Policy
At Centurion Junior Squash, we are deeply committed to fostering a professional, respectful, safe, and comfortable environment for all our players, coaches, officials, and staff. Appropriate attire plays a crucial role in ensuring player safety, promoting mutual respect, and upholding the values and professional standards of CJS.
This policy outlines our expectations for on-court clothing and footwear, guided by the general dress code standards and principles applied by Squash South Africa and World Squash Federation/Professional Squash Association. These principles require players to wear squash-specific attire that is:
- Appropriate for sport
- Non-transparent
- Professional in appearance
- Respectful in a shared training environment
The intention of this policy is not to judge or criticise, but to:
- Protect players
- Maintain a professional sporting culture
- Ensure a safe and respectful environment for all
- Prevent any attire that may cause discomfort, distraction, or misunderstanding for other players or coaches.
This policy is applied consistently and fairly, and is not aimed at any individual player. We ask for everyone’s cooperation in adhering to these guidelines. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact Maryna Fourie.
General Guidelines for All Players
- Footwear:
- Only non-marking court shoes are permitted on the squash courts. This is essential to protect our court surfaces and ensure player safety. Please check your shoe soles to confirm they are non-marking.
- Socks are recommended for comfort and hygiene.
- Headwear:
- Caps are not permitted on court.
- Headbands are allowed for sweat absorption.
- Jewellery & Accessories:
- For safety and to prevent injury, we strongly recommend removing all rings, necklaces, and bangles before playing.
- Ankle bracelets are not permitted.
- Earrings should be small studs or sleepers to minimize risk during active play.
- Overall Appearance:
- All clothing should be clean, in good repair, and fit appropriately.
- While we don’t have restrictions on branding or logos, we encourage a neat and sporty presentation. Players are also welcome to wear the CJS-branded shirts, available on our online shop HERE.
- Clothing must be made of non-transparent material and should not be excessively tight to the extent that it compromises modesty or professionalism.
Attire for Boys
To ensure comfort, safety, and respect for all, boys are required to wear the following:
- Tops:
- Shirts with sleeves are mandatory. This includes short-sleeved t-shirts or collared polo shirts.
- Playing shirtless, in sleeveless shirts, or tank tops is not permitted.
- Bottoms:
- Appropriate athletic shorts are required, similar to those worn in tennis.
- Shorts should be at least mid-thigh length when standing upright.
- Running shorts or compression shorts worn as outer garments are not permitted.
Attire for Girls
To ensure comfort, safety, and respect for all, girls are required to wear the following:
- Tops:
- Racerback tops, sleeveless tops, or tops with sleeves are permitted.
- All tops must sufficiently cover the midriff and ensure the décolletage area remains covered, especially when bending forward to pick up a ball. The intent is to ensure modesty and comfort during all squash movements. Tops should not be excessively revealing.
- Appropriate sports bras that provide medium to high impact support are recommended for comfort and support during play.
- Bottoms:
- All players must ensure that no underwear is visible at any time during play or exercise.
- This can be achieved by:
- Wearing skorts or sports dresses with integrated compression shorts or leggings.
- Wearing athletic shorts, skipants, or hotpants as an underlayer beneath skirts or non-integrated sports dresses.
- Skirts or sports dresses worn without an integrated underlayer (such as compression shorts or leggings) are not permitted.
- For the outer layer, no excessively short athletic shorts, “hotpants,” or very short skipants are permitted. This also applies to see-through or semi-transparent training shorts, or extremely tight shorts worn without a skirt or skort in a mixed training setting.
- Skorts and dresses should provide adequate coverage, extending sufficiently to cover the gluteal area when standing upright and during active movement.
- Long athletic tights or leggings are permitted as outerwear, especially in cooler weather, when attending CJS classes. These may also be worn as the underlayer beneath appropriate outer shorts, skirts, or dresses. Please note that long athletic tights and leggings are generally not acceptable for tournaments.
Policy Compliance and Implementation
We expect all players to adhere to these guidelines. CJS coaches, management, squash officials, and school staff reserve the right to address any attire that does not meet these standards respectfully and privately when necessary.
Centurion Junior Squash is committed to player development, well-being, and strong values both on and off the court. We thank players and parents for their understanding, cooperation, and support in upholding the standards and values of CJS.
